Originally named Hot Springs, the city changed its name to Truth or Consequences, the title of a popular NBC radio program. In 1950, Ralph Edwards, the host of the radio quiz show Truth or Consequences, announced that he would air the program from the first town that renamed itself after the show. Hot Springs won the honor. Edwards visited the town during the first weekend of May for the next fifty years.

Ralph Edwards Park remains a hub of activity in the city. The park hosts the Sierra County Farmers' Market where you'll find the freshest local produce, eggs, baked goods, and beautiful locally-made arts & crafts every Saturday from Memorial Day Weekend through Halloween Weekend from 8:30 am to 11:30 am.

The city is also home to the Geronimo Springs Museum and the Hamilton Military Museum (opened November 2009), which is part of Veterans Memorial Park.

There are also several noteworthy events and activities that occur in the areas surrounding Truth or Consequences, including the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The balloon fiesta is a yearly festival of hot air balloons that takes place during early October. It's a nine day event, and hosts around 750 balloons. It is the largest hot air balloon festival in the world.

Spaceport America, 30 miles east of Truth or Consequences, is the world's first purpose-built commercial spaceport. Virgin Galactic plans to provide sub-orbital spaceflights to the paying public. The Very Large Array (VLA), a component of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory of telescopes, is located approximately 100 miles from Truth or Consequences.

Elephant Butte Lake State Park is just one of several nearby state parks. Elephant Butte Reservoir (the largest reservoir in New Mexico) is located just 5 miles from Truth or Consequences. Fishing is a popular recreational activity on the reservoir, which contains striped bass, white bass, largemouth bass, crappie, walleye and catfish.

The wonderful little town of Hatch (population about 1,600) is just 35 miles south of town. The Hatch Chile Festival is an annual event that occurs each Labor Day. This event attracts people worldwide to this town known as the "Chile Capital of the World." The small town has accommodated up to 30,000 people for this event.

There are very few actual houses, let alone 3-bedroom houses, in Truth or Consequences' hot springs district. Don't miss out on this golden opportunity.
